When it comes to produce, dairy, meat and eggs, we’ve made organic our number one priority. As advocates for healthy living, and Winnipeg’s largest purveyors of natural products, this priority is a no-brainer.
Organic foods are free of synthetic pesticides, petroleum-based fertilizers and sewage-sludge based fertilizers. Aside from being absent of these harsh chemicals, organic foods do not contain preservatives, meaning that the products you are getting are fresher and typically more nutrient dense. But that’s not all.
Are Fresher. Once produce is harvested, all of the beneficial nutrients and enzymes naturally begin to dwindle. Without chemical preservatives to extend the shelf-life, organic produce is fresher and therefor likely to contain more vitamins and minerals.
Are more environmentally friendly. Organic farms produce significantly less pollution, use less water, reduce soil erosion and improve soil fertility. Surrounding wildlife is also impacted less.
Are free of antibiotics, animal by products and growth hormones. Organically raised animals are given more space and access to outdoors, giving them a better chance at remaining healthy naturally. This means less need for antibiotics or hormones that end up in your meat.
What’s in a name?
Manitoba’s weather can be very harsh, which significantly shapes agricultural production. Making the choice to grow organic produce or raise organic livestock in these conditions is no small feat, and organic certification is costly. As a result many of the local products we carry in the summer months are grown organically but do not yet have organic certifications. At the end of the day, the more support we show for these local do-gooders, the sooner they will be able to put these certifications in place.
