Healthy Tips

Happy Thanksgiving!

Celebrate a healthy and happy Thanksgiving

While the cheer is in abundance, our sodium intake may be, too. Health Canada conducted a survey in 2017 of Canadian’s intake of sodium and the results showed that the average sodium intake of Canadians is currently estimated at 2,760 mg per day, which is still well above the recommended maximum daily intake of 2,300 mg per day. This doesn’t just include the table, sea and Himalayan salt you add for extra flavour; there is sodium added in the processing of food itself, as according to Health Canada 77 per cent of dietary sodium comes from commercially processed and prepared foods, while only 11 per cent is added by consumers and the remaining 12 per cent naturally occurs in foods. A tip to ensure your sodium levels aren’t higher than they should be is to always read the label to understand how much sodium per serving is in each item.

Adding more natural and organic foods to your holiday meals from the fall harvest selection is the best way to know what is in your food. Although sodium naturally occurs in food, it is balanced out by many other nutrients found in vegetables and fruits. Plus, you reap the benefits of many essential nutrients also chock full in these whole foods to support your body during this change in weather. Root vegetables, including carrots, squash, and pumpkins that are in-season are packed full of beta-carotene, which is converted into vitamin A in the body and helps maintain eyesight, skin, membranes and immune function, along with bone support and night vision.

We’ve whipped up a few organic recipes to add to your repertoire to really wow the crowd. Check them out here.
