Organic Month 2024
What is Organic?
Organic encourages practices that increase biodiversity and reduce negative environmental impacts, while also supporting animal health and welfare. If it is a seed, animal feed, or human food in Canada, it must meet the regulated legal standards of the Canada Organic Regime (COR).
The Canadian Organic Standards prohibit:
✔️ hydroponics
✔️ synthetic fertilizers and toxic, synthetic pesticides;
✔️ genetic engineering (GMOs) in seed, feed, and ingredients;
✔️ artificial colours, flavours, and preservatives;
✔️growth hormones, routine use of antibiotics, and animal cloning;
✔️ irradiation;
✔️ sewage sludge; and more.
What is Organic Month?
Canada’s National Organic Month is the largest annual celebration of organic food, farming and products across the country. Hundreds of individual events showcase the benefits of organic agriculture and its positive impact on the environment. Organic represents a vibrant alternative food system and an alternative option for clothing, personal care and cleaning products.
In past years, events included anything from pickling workshops to recipe contests, farm tours, or organic food and drink tastings in retail locations across the country.
